Great news for the Downtown L.A. Streetcar Project! Metro has agreed to procure an environmental consultant following the Downtown L.A. Streetcar Project’s submission of a $25 million federal grant application, which will enable LASI to secure environmental clearances in 2010. Assistance from Metro will be paid for by the CRA/LA and LASI’s federal funds that have already been obligated. The RFQ/P process will be initiated shortly following Metro’s solicitation procedures.
Metro Procures Environmental Consultant on behalf of Downtown L.A. Streetcar Project
February 25th, 2010 by Eric MetzDowntown L.A. Streetcar Project Competes for $25 Million
February 19th, 2010 by Eric MetzSecuring federal funds has been a top priority for LASI and our partners (CRA/LA, the City of LA, LADOT, METRO, and others), and we just submitted a $25 million federal grant application for streetcar funding to enhance the livability and sustainability of Downtown L.A. The federal government made a significant pool of resources available for streetcar projects through a competitive application process, and this funding source does not compete with other transit projects in L.A. Grant awards will be announced in Summer 2010.

December 14th, 2009 by Eric MetzOn December 10, 2009, the Downtown L.A. Streetcar Project received $250k in federal funding to move the streetcar project into its environmental phase of analysis! This funding was secured by Congressmember Lucille Roybal-Allard and will play a critical role in positioning the streetcar project to better compete for a multitude of funding sources. LASI’s Executive Director celebrated this news with Councilmmeber José Huizar, and you can read more here.
“A downtown streetcar will create jobs, help people circulate between destinations, connect transit options and spur economic development while reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said Councilmember José Huizar. “I applaud Congressmember Roybal-Allard for believing in our goal of riding a streetcar Downtown by 2014. We’re very fortunate to have a strong streetcar advocate in Washington D.C.”

LASI, Metro’s LRTP, and RFQ’s!
October 26th, 2009 by Eric MetzWe want to take a moment and thank all the consultants who responded to our Request for Qualifications! We received a ton of interest and a number of really strong responses, and we anticipate completing the RFQ/P process by the end of November.
In addition, LASI is very happy to report Los Angeles City Councilmember and Metro Board Member José Huizar was able to position Los Angeles Streetcar as a Tier II Unfunded Project within Metro’s Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP).The LRTP is a comprehensive transportation document that will guide transit projects throughout LA County for the next 30 years. Securing an unfunded designation is critical for LASI, as it has positioned the streetcar to be highly competitive when applying for State and Federal funding.

LA Streetcar partners with Fixing Angelenos Stuck in Traffic (FAST)
September 4th, 2009 by Eric Metz
LASI is happy to announce a partnership with Fixing Angelenos Stuck in Traffic (FAST). After meeting with Hilary Norton, FAST’s Executive Director, both organizations recognized that they share common transportation interests. FAST advocates for near-term solutions (three to five years) that can have very significant impacts on reducing LA’s traffic. FAST is actively building a coalition of community groups and individuals to ensure that funding and implementing fast-term transit solutions are a high priority in Los Angeles County.
Partnering with FAST will enhance LASI’s efforts to deliver a Downtown LA streetcar system by 2014. As LASI’s community outreach and stakeholder meetings have demonstrated, a streetcar system is critically important to improving transportation circulation in Downtown LA. Operating a streetcar within Downtown will provide the “last mile” solution needed to integrate the area’s current and future rail, bus, and parking facilities together into an innovative, efficient, and modern circulation system. This level of connectivity will enable people to visit entertainment, cultural, and civic destinations – such as the Disney Concert Hall, LA Live/Staples, or the Civic Center – while being able to shop, dine, or have fun in Downtown’s burgeoning arts, entertainment, and business districts.
LASI looks forward to working with FAST on upcoming transportation issues, and we invite you to learn more about their current projects by visiting their website: http://www.fastla.org/
