The Bringing Back Broadway initiative, launched in January 2008, is a 10 year plan to restore vitality and activity to the historic Broadway corridor. A champion of the streetcar, Los Angeles Councilmember José Huizar has been at the forefront of this project and considers Bringing Back Broadway one his highest priorities. The initiative also enjoys support from a broad base of public officials and agencies including Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Councilmember Jan Perry, the Community Redevelopment Agency, LADOT, METRO, and many others.
A public and private sector endeavor, the initiative proposes to: revitalize and reactivate the twelve historic theaters located along Broadway (one of the largest concentrations of historic theatres on one street in the nation); to create a sense of place and history through urban planning, design and lighting; and, to reactive more than a million square feet of vacant commercial space.
Part of this restoration will include the reintroduction of the streetcar within the Broadway corridor which will not only reinforce a sense of history, but more importantly, will act as a catalyst for revitalization. The streetcar will provide dependable and reliable transportation to visitors and residents between several of the most visited areas of Downtown Los Angeles, including LA Live and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
